UP! High School Homework Tutor
Objective
By providing homework support to students, volunteers will contribute to the UP! goal of 100% of our students graduating from a 4-year university.
Program Information (2025 Fall Semester – possibly Spring 2025)
Program Dates:
September 2nd 2025 – December 18th 2025
Homework help hours:
Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs 4:45pm-6:45pm
Location: Canal Alliance, 711 Grand Ave, Bay Building
Responsibilities
- Provide homework support to individuals or small groups of students
- Facilitate academic skills workshops as needed
- Communicate regularly with the program supervisor about any academic or socio-emotional issues
- Provide a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations
- Sign in and out daily, and wear a name badge when on site
Skills
- Ability to build strong, respectful, and culturally responsive relationships with diverse students
- Awareness of systemic barriers faced by immigrant and first-generation students
- Strong content knowledge in your identified subject(s): Math, Science, or English. Math tutors must pass an assessment to tutor Math
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, volunteers and staff
- Bilingual in Spanish and English (preferred but not required)
Requirements
- Attend a mandatory volunteer orientation once per year
- Minimum commitment of a two-hour shift per week
- Volunteers must be 18+ and pass a criminal background check prior to participation
- Sign a volunteer agreement
- Commitment to volunteer for the complete fall semester
