From Dream to Dream Job: Jonathan’s Training for a Career in Finance
May 20, 2025

At just five years old, Jonathan migrated to California with his parents in search of a better life. Like many immigrant families, financial pressures shaped his early years. After graduating from high school, Jonathan chose to work full-time to help support his family. College wasn’t an option at the time—but the dream of a better future Was always with him
That dream found its spark when, through his mother, he discovered Canal Alliance’s Latinos in Finance program, offered in partnership with Bank of America and UnidosUS
“I wanted a new opportunity to move up and grow professionally,” Jonathan says. And, thanks to his participation in Canal Alliance’s Latinos in Finance (LIF) training program, he reports that now, “I have so much more knowledge about finance and learned so much.”
Through the LIF program, Jonathan developed new technical skills and built confidence and a vision for his career. According to Canal Alliance staff, Jonathan’s dedication stood out from day one. Regina Vindell, program supervisor, shares: “I’m proud of Jonathan for his dedication throughout the Latinos In Finance class. His commitment paid off, and it’s inspiring to see him now working with Bank of America. He is a great example of what’s possible when you stay focused and believe in yourself.”
After completing the course, Jonathan applied to Bank of America, completing a robust application and interview process, and was hired as a Relationship Banker. Reflecting on this process, Jonathan says, “If you don’t try, you could never know how far you could have gone.”
To date, Jonathan reports a wage increase of 20% jump in pay, going from $20 to $25 per hour, access to health benefits, and a clear path for his own advancement.
