San Rafael: Support Continues To Help Fire Victims In San Rafael
August 27, 2025

Following a devastating apartment fire last Thursday that left two people dead and displaced 60 in the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael, the effort to help victims rebuild their lives continues.
According to the Canal Alliance, a nonprofit the serves the Canal community, all fire refugees have been transferred from a temporary shelter into hotels. The food recovery nonprofit Extra Food distributed meals and groceries to the victims and will continue to do so until families are in homes with kitchens. Canal Alliance has been helping families secure identification documents and passports, as well as helping people recover immigration-related documents lost in the fire. Pro bono immigration legal representation is also available, as many families lost all their savings. Legal Aid of Marin is helping families with advice on securing compensation for their losses.
Canal Alliance is still accepting cash contributions or gift cards through their website or in person at 91 Larkspur Street.
Several GoFundMe sites have been launched by supporters, including the local advocacy group Fuerzas Unidas. Links below include information on each fund recipient, which include a community caregiver.
