Magic in Community Appreciation Event: Celebrating the Heart of Canal Alliance
July 9, 2025

On June 5th, we hosted a one-of-a-kind volunteer appreciation celebration themed “Magic in Community”. It was an evening filled with joy, laughter, friendship, and new connections. Although we’ve held volunteer appreciation events in the past, the magic of this evening truly brought people together in a special way. Volunteers mingled more than ever, sharing personal stories, what brought them to Canal Alliance, and how meaningful it was to be in community with one another.
This event was especially unique. This was the first time we featured a live performance at a volunteer appreciation event. We thought a magic show would be a fun and meaningful way to celebrate literal magic while also setting the tone for an evening filled with lightness, joy, and connection. The Gentleman Magician dazzled the crowd with his performance, creating a room full of awe, smiles, and of course, magic! After the show, we invited guests to reflect on magical moments they’ve experienced over the past year while volunteering or supporting our programs. Several individuals shared aloud; some spoke about the joy of connecting with new volunteers like they had that night, while others expressed hopes and dreams for our community rooted in freedom, compassion, and acceptance.
Delicious food and desserts were also part of the celebration, prepared by two graduates of our Construyendo Mi Negocio (“Building My Business”) course, a program within our Workforce Development initiative. Dinner was catered by Algeber Cordova, proud owner of the El Sabor de Tabasco food truck, and dessert was provided by Nadia Montoya of Nadia’s Desserts. It was a beautiful way to showcase the talent and entrepreneurship within our very own community.
We recognize that during this time in our country, many may not feel there is much to celebrate. We know that the community we serve is facing incredible challenges, and that is exactly why it felt so important to pause and honor the people who help keep our work moving forward. Our volunteers, donors, and supporters play an essential role in ensuring that our programs continue to serve those who need them most, especially now.
That evening, we chose to embrace joy as an act of resistance. We gathered not just to be entertained, but to celebrate each other, to connect, and to be reminded of the power and magic we hold when we come together. The smiles, the laughter, the shared stories, and the sense of belonging in the room were a testament to the strength of this community. We are so grateful to walk alongside each of you as we work together to build a brighter future for our immigrant community, grounded in joy, compassion, and hope.
We’re so grateful to every volunteer who makes our work possible. Your time, compassion, and commitment bring real magic to our community.
