November eNewsletter

November 13, 2018

November 13, 2018 Tuesday’s election results and the national statistics and reports around voter engagement inspire us at Canal Alliance to consider and discuss what these key wins and disappointing losses mean to our community and especially to the hard-working and motivated immigrants that we serve. As an organization, we are energized and mobilized. Latinos across the country demonstrated the impact of our vote by registering and voting in record numbers. Thanks to the immense effort of advocates, volunteers, and voters alike, our elected officials now, more than ever before, reflect our diverse communities. Among these trailblazers are Latinas, women of color, and members of the LGBT community who will serve as role models to a new generation of engaged and educated Latinos. We also recognize that we still have a lot of work to do. We will continue to bring light to the issues that affect the lives of immigrants and their families. We will continue to educate our elected representatives to take actions that support our vision for a just Marin: a place where everyone can live, work and achieve their dreams. We have just released our 2018 Public Policy Agenda, which outlines two issues that impact our community and includes clear priorities that will guide our advocacy efforts in the coming months. We are committed to closing the academic achievement gap for Latino students in Marin and we will double down on our efforts to ensure protection for immigrants under SB-54, the California Values Act. We will also join a coalition of advocates in calling for increased transparency of local jail entanglement with immigration enforcement on Thursday, December 6th at the Marin County Truth Act Forum. Lucia Martel-Dow, Director of Immigration & Social Services, will present to the Board of Supervisors alongside a representative from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) on the level of access that immigration enforcement officers are granted to immigrants within our local jail system. We invite you to join us as we work to create a community where hard-working immigrants have equal access to resources and are respected as the important assets that they are.
