In-Person Volunteer Teacher’s Aide for Digital Literacy Classes

Overview
The Canal Alliance Adult Education program is dedicated to empowering Latino immigrants through accessible, high-quality educational programming and education navigation. In partnership with other community organizations, we provide classes in English as a Second Language, Citizenship, Digital Literacy and more, fostering skills that enhance employment opportunities, community engagement, and personal enrichment.
Our Digital Literacy classes help students gain the basic computer and internet navigation skills they need for work, continued education, and everyday life.
Please note: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
Class Dates, Times and Location
- Fall class dates (choose Group 1, Group 2, or both)
- Group 1: Four Wednesdays, October 29 – November 19
- Group 2: Four Tuesdays, November 25 – December 16
- Time: 6:45 pm – 9:15 pm (class is 7:00 – 9:00 pm, plus help with set up and clean up)
- Location: Canal Alliance, Bay Building, 711 Grand Avenue, San Rafael
Required Onboarding and Training for NEW Volunteers
- Sign volunteering paperwork
- Review presentation on volunteering at Canal Alliance
- Take a self-paced online training on Digital Navigation (1 hour total, free)
Required Onboarding and Training for RETURNING Volunteers
- Sign 2025-26 Adult Education Volunteer Agreement if needed
- Take a self-paced online training on Digital Navigation if you have not taken it before (1 hour total, free)
Aide Responsibilities
- Help the teacher provide a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment
- Help set up classroom with Chromebooks and other materials
- Assist the teacher with management of the class, including distributing materials, taking attendance
- Per teacher’s instructions, work with individual students or small groups as they practice
- Monitor class and advise teacher of students who are struggling, or topics that need clarification
- Respect and follow program policies and teacher’s instructions
- Respond promptly to communications from teacher, team, and Adult Education staff
- Be culturally responsive and culturally humble in the classroom

- Patient and attentive with students
- Enjoy interacting with people of all ages and ethnicities
- Able to build positive and respectful relationships with students, teachers and staff
- Comfortable working with people of varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
Requirements
- Age 18 or above
- Alignment with Canal Alliance’s mission and Adult Education program goals
- Completion of onboarding and training listed above
- Commitment to cultural responsiveness and cultural humility
