Youth Education Hackathon!
Event: Dream, Code, Inspire: A Community Hackathon
Date & Time: Saturday, May 10th, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Location: 711 Grand Ave, San Rafael, CA 94901 – Bay Building
Overview:
Canal Alliance is excited to host Dream, Code, Inspire: A Community Hackathon for middle school students! This event will introduce students to coding with Scratch, a beginner-friendly programming language, while also fostering skills in collaboration, problem-solving, and creative thinking. Participants will work in teams to design a project that highlights a challenge or strength in their community.
We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to help make this event a success!
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities
Mentors – STILL ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS
- Support student teams throughout the day as they work on their projects
- Offer encouragement, ask guiding questions, and help teams stay on track
- Full-day commitment required: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- No coding experience necessary—just a passion for working with youth!
Registration Support – AT CAPACITY
- Check students in, provide name tags, and ensure a smooth arrival process
- Shift: 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Breakfast Setup & Distribution – AT CAPACITY
- Assist with setting up and handing out breakfast
- Shift: 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Lunch Setup & Distribution – AT CAPACITY
- Help organize and distribute lunch to participants
- Shift: 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
Judges – AT CAPACITY
- Watch student presentations at the end of the day
- Evaluate projects and help select the winning team(s)
- Shift: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Volunteer Requirements
- Friendly, reliable, and organized
- Comfortable engaging with middle school students
- No prior coding experience required (except for judges who should feel confident evaluating student presentations)
