2026 CANAL NEIGHBORHOOD SNAPSHOT

Where the Canal neighborhood is today and what residents say they need to thrive in the future

For too long, planning in neighborhoods like the Canal has been driven by top‑down decisions, with residents invited in late to react rather than lead. Nuestro Canal, Nuestro Futuro (NCNF) flips that model. In partnership with the 20‑member Consejo de Residentes (Resident Advisory Council) and organizations including Canal Alliance, Community Action Marin, Greenbelt Alliance, Marin Audubon Society, Multicultural Center of Marin, Marin Promise Partnership, the City of San Rafael, and the County of Marin, NCNF is a resident‑led initiative grounded in the belief that resident wisdom is expertise.

The 2026 Canal Neighborhood Snapshot, below, is the first step toward a Community Vision Plan — capturing where the Canal stands today and ensuring future planning, investment, and climate solutions are guided by the voices, knowledge, and priorities of the community.

With NCNF, we have committed to a different kind of planning — one where residents lead, institutions listen, and resources follow the community’s direction.
