Through four key initiatives, Canal Alliance is advancing housing security, tenant protections, and affordable housing solutions in Marin with unwavering determination.
- We provide rental assistance to clients as needed in order to keep people in their homes;
- We are growing a portfolio of sustainably-built, high-quality, low-cost, and rent-controlled apartments that we own and manage for the community;
- We educate tenants about their rights and are building a coalition of advocates to push for change; and
- We counsel community members about the path to homeownership, which is a key building block for building wealth.
When we invest in affordable housing and stand firm in protecting tenants, we don’t just solve a housing problem — we create a more equitable, more just Marin. Together, we can build the future this community deserves.
Rental Assistance
Safe housing is a crucial stepping stone on the path out of poverty. That’s why we provide rental assistance to Canal residents and our clients, ensuring they have the stability they need to focus on their dreams — without the constant worry of where they will live next month.

Affordable Housing
Marin County is facing an extreme housing crisis, and the Latino community is bearing the brunt of the severe shortage of high-quality, affordable homes. Canal Alliance is on a bold mission to purchase 100 units in Marin County by 2028, with a clear vision: to ensure these homes are not only sustainable, high-quality, and energy-efficient but also affordable and rent-controlled.
This initiative is about more than just providing housing — it’s about creating a future where families are protected from displacement and can build bright futures for themselves and their children.
Home Ownership Counseling
Homeownership is one of the most powerful tools for building wealth, and this is especially true for Latino communities across the U.S. Canal Alliance, in partnership with UnidosUS, is committed to helping renters take the crucial first steps toward homeownership. Through our free and confidential advisory services, we guide individuals on the path to owning a home, offering personalized support to build strong credit when needed and improving eligibility for a home loan, and ultimately creating long-term financial security.
As part of this effort, we also offer talks and training sessions with partner agencies and within the community, providing individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to pursue homeownership.
Tenant Rights Education & Advocacy
Renters have rights, regardless of immigration status. Canal Alliance educates renters about these rights and, alongside the community, advocates for stronger tenant protections in Marin.
Because we know that when renters are informed, they are empowered to protect themselves and their families, stand up for fair treatment, and build stronger communities.
