University Prep (UP!) student Alex Macias has already been honored with the MCE Because of Youth Award — an outstanding recognition of his leadership, creativity, and deep commitment to environmental stewardship. As a student in Canal Alliance’s UP! program, Alex has grown his passion for learning and service into meaningful action, consistently showing what it means to lead with purpose in his community.
Through hands-on experiences with Linking Individuals to their Natural Community (LINC) and Inspiring Young Emerging Leaders (IYEL) at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Alex has played an active role in environmental restoration and conservation efforts across Marin County, strengthening both his skills and his connection to local ecosystems. He has also stepped into a powerful mentorship role through the Trailblazers Program, guiding middle school students through outdoor learning experiences that build confidence, teamwork, and environmental awareness.
Alex continues to expand his impact beyond the field. As part of the Sustainable San Rafael Student Advisory Committee, he has contributed to community conversations and action projects focused on sustainability. He also uses creativity as a tool for education — helping elementary students understand climate issues like sea-level rise through art, making complex topics accessible and engaging.
This award reflects not only Alex’s accomplishments, but the consistency, heart, and initiative he brings to everything he does.
