With more than 50,000 people testing positive for COVID-19 in the Bay Area, 2,649 of these cases have occurred in Marin County and over half of them in the densely populated Canal neighborhood. The Canal’s 20% positivity rate is triple that of the rest of Marin.
Latinos make up 16% of Marin County's population, yet currently account for nearly 80% of the county's coronavirus cases. It's the largest racial disparity of any county in the Bay Area, and part of the reason the county has landed on the state's watch list.

We are seeing first-hand at Canal Alliance that the coronavirus pandemic and shelter in place order has drastically decreased immigrant families’ earnings. Many residents of the Canal are not only in danger of going hungry, but are also experiencing deep anxiety about how they will feed themselves and their families.
Officials in the San Rafael tech shop were able to build a mesh Wi-Fi network to connect students in the dense Canal Neighborhood with the help of volunteer expertise and funding from across sectors.
The Latino community is on the front lines in this crisis. We continue to show up to work in our nation’s hospitals, supermarkets, farms, and businesses large and small. At the same time, we are disproportionately being impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic.
