Residents can receive free health screenings Monday and Tuesday in San Rafael’s Canal neighborhood.
The organizations Canal Alliance and MiSalud Health will offer blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks, along with weight, body mass index and waist measurements. Appointments will be available from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. both days at Canal Alliance’s location at 91 Larkspur St. No fasting is required, and there are no copays or fees.
Participants will meet with MiSalud Health coaches, who will explain their results and provide guidance on follow-up care. The screenings are available in English and Spanish.
MiSalud Health coaches include physicians, dietitians and psychologists licensed in Mexico and the U.S. They will be on-site throughout the event to walk participants through their results and connect them with follow-up care and mental health support if needed.
The event follows a MiSalud analysis of 30,000 telehealth consultations and 6,000 biometric screenings among Latino community members. The analysis found that nine in 10 had cholesterol profiles requiring clinical attention, fewer than half of men screened had normal blood pressure, only 15% of men and women screened were at a normal weight, and more than 40% were at increased risk for diabetes. Nearly 7 in 10 women screened were found to be at extreme metabolic risk based on waist measurement.
