The event will feature activities and a variety of food vendors.
Residents of Marin County will be able to enjoy a free community marketplace featuring activities and discounts from various local businesses participating in the event.
The organization Canal Alliance will be hosting the event.
One of the businesses participating in the event will be the mixed martial arts studio Fuerza Kickboxing.
“We’re going to give demonstrations of what we do in class, hold raffles, and sell shirts, gloves, and games,” said Karla Oviedo of Fuerza Kickboxing.
She is the daughter of immigrants who came with dreams of a better future for her and her siblings.
Karla wants to make her studio a place that showcases the hard work of Latinos in this country.
“I want to build my future, but more than anything, it’s an honor to have parents who have always supported me,” Karla said.
“In times like these, when the Latino community has been criminalized and targeted, there is a narrative we are trying to change: Latinos play an important role in the country’s economy,” said Omar Carrera, spokesperson for the organization.
But martial arts won’t be the only attraction at the event — there will also be a wide variety of businesses, including authentic Yucatecan food vendors.
“A lot of people came to visit us, and our business grew because of these kinds of events,” said Santos Couch, owner of El Yucateco Taquería.
The community marketplace will take place on Sunday, May 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 711 Grand Avenue in San Rafael.
