From the Board President and CEO

Last year was our most important and impactful year yet. On the heels of a global pandemic, we met critical milestones and launched new initiatives to support immigrants and their families on a pathway out of poverty. Your investment made this possible, and helped to create a stronger and more equitable Marin for everyone. Thank you for your partnership.

What does this progress look like? More than 150 students are on track to become the first in their families to graduate from college. We know that when students have personalized academic support, they develop the knowledge and confidence to graduate from college. Yet because first-gen college graduates still face many barriers to the professional workplace, we expanded our support by launching a new college to career program.

We also know that when immigrants have one trusted place that can help address all of their needs — even if that means referring them to a trusted partner — they face fewer obstacles on their path to a better life. Nowhere is the impact of our model felt more strongly than in the way that our immigration and social services teams collaborate to provide personalized support to the newcomer youth who are arriving in Marin after fleeing violence or crushing poverty in their countries of origin.

Others in our community are learning English, gaining digital skills and becoming US citizens; they are gaining quality jobs and launching successful small businesses.

While there is much progress to report, many challenges remain. Every day we hear from immigrants who face a myriad of obstacles as they simply seek to ensure safety, security and wellness for their families. Fortunately, we also hear from many people like you, who support our mission and are determined to stand up to ensure that immigrants have equitable access to resources and opportunity.

With your support, we continue to deepen our work to change the systems and structures that oppress and marginalize the low-income Latino immigrant community. We strive to lift the voices of the community and, with our nonprofit partners, to implement a strategic policy plan aimed at improving family well-being, economic security, and housing stability.

We look forward to the next 40 years with optimism and determination. Thank you for your partnership and trust.

A snapshot of the Impact you helped us to achieve

Developing
Young
Leaders

Latino students are overcoming odds to be the first in their families to obtain a college degree, and giving back as volunteers and young professionals. We are inspired by these young people, and proud to support them by providing intensive academic support, leadership development, social-emotional learning, college scholarship support, outdoor education, mentorship, and access to our licensed behavioral health services.

Mentoring
immigrant youth

As an undergraduate student juggling courses in psychology, Jordan Vasquez volunteered as a teacher’s aide at Canal Alliance, helping immigrants learn to speak English. Now, as part of a growing team with Canal Alliance’s newest program, Jordan serves as a mentor to newly arrived immigrant youth.

Graduate looks
to the future

Maria Espinosa is among Cal Poly Humboldt’s first graduating class of 2022. She has been part of our University Prep program since middle school, took advantage of outdoor enrichment opportunities, and is among the first group of graduates in our emerging College to Career program.

Investing
in a skilled
workforce

Immigrant entrepreneurs are growing small businesses and workers are gaining skills that lead to higher paying jobs, often while working full-time and raising children. Our workforce programs include ESL and digital literacy classes that provide a stepping stone toward greater opportunity, and certificate-based training and small business classes that support people on their journey toward financial security.

Entrepreneur achieves through education

Melkyn Mazariegos came to the U.S. from Guatemala as a teenager to support his family and make a better life for himself. He took advantage of every educational opportunity available to him, including ESL and workforce development classes at Canal Alliance. Now 22, Melkyn has started his own business.

A budding flower business takes root

Fifteen years ago, Iris de Leon took ESL classes at Canal Alliance. Last year she started her own business. “It just made sense for me to go into the flower business. I’m good at this and I love it. The only thing was, I had to update my knowledge and skillset in order to successfully plan for my business. That’s why I took the Construyendo mi Negocio classes.”

Empowering community
leaders & new voters

Neighborhood leaders are making an impact by advancing initiatives to increase opportunity, improve neighborhood safety, and enhance quality of life. Our immigration legal services and citizenship classes support people to explore their legal options and obtain work authorization and citizenship. We help new U.S. citizens to register to vote and support their dreams of fully participating in our democratic processes.

A family’s path to political
participation

Gabriela Araceli Guiterrez and Filemon Para Hernandez met while working in a factory in Michoacan, Mexico. They moved to the U.S. in search of opportunity, raised their family in Marin, and with support from our immigration and adult education teams, became U.S. citizens so they could vote and make a difference for the community.

Neighborhood leader creates change

“We are parents who live in the Canal and after work we dedicate time to volunteer, to address the problems of the community,” says Darling Ruiz, co-founder of Voces del Canal. We are proud to stand with Voces del Canal to fight for equitable services that improve quality of life in the Canal neighborhood – change end to public health, safety, transit and more.

Partnering
To Create
an Equitable
Marin

We partner with people who share our belief that Latino immigrants should have support to help them break the generational cycle of poverty. Each year, we engage hundreds of volunteers to support our mission and programs, and collaborate strategically with other leaders in industry, government, and the nonprofit sector to expand immigrants’ rights and access to opportunity and resources.

Scientist inspires young Latinas

Krystal Sandza is a technical scientist at BioMarin and a role model for young women in our University Prep program who are exploring STEM careers. This kind of mentorship is critical for students who are the first in their families to attend college. Krystal is also a member of the Canal Alliance board and a passionate advocate for social justice.

University student gives back

As a Canal Alliance intern, Britney Guiterrez Calderon registered new voters and advocated for equitable public infrastructure. Britney is one of dozens of students who partner with us through the service learning program at Dominican University of California, a long-standing social justice collaborative with Canal Alliance that deepened in 2022.
