Residents in the Canal area of San Rafael are calling on the city to improve public lighting to increase safety after dark.

Canal Alliance and Dominican University of California helped develop a project to identify seven routes that need better lighting to allow residents to move about at night without fear. Volunteers have taken photos of the streets to present to the city.

On Saturday, the Voces del Canal organization plans to display the photos on Alto Street near the Canal Alliance office. They also plan to gather accounts from residents about their experiences in the areas. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At a Voces del Canal meeting this week, Canal residents said they are grateful their concerns are being heard. Marina Palma said that for years residents have feared walking home after dark.
