Special Interest Classes

Culinary Class

Students participating in the culinary class will have the opportunity to attend the weekly workshop at the MYC’s commercial kitchen. They will learn proper cooking and kitchen safety techniques, and learn how to follow and read a recipe, while creating delicious and healthy food. Nutrition is openly embedded in the curriculum as students learn the how and why to making healthy food choices.

Drama Class

Canal Alliance and Marin Shakespeare Co. are working in partnership to bring theatre off the stage and into the streets. To create social change through drama.
Students will be encouraged to let their imagination go wild! Tell their own story, their community's story, gain confidence and find their voice. The goal of Teatro Lab is to wake people out of passivity and inspire them to act on what they would like to see happen in their communities and their lives. We will be playing theatre games, building confidence and courage to speak and act in front of others, writing and performing our own pieces of theatre based on our own stories and stories from the community we live in.

Multimedia Class

Students participating in this class will get the opportunity to have a more hands on experience with multimedia. They will get a short training on how to make movies starting from creating a script, developing a storyboard, learning how to light up a room, use the camera and edit their movies using imovie or final cut-pro. Students who complete the class will have gained the skills to start creating their own movies and will become the future media leaders for events that happen in the community and in Canal Alliance.

Business Class

The Business Class is full of winners. The students with the best business ideas as selected by a panel of community professionals won large financial stipends and the chance to bring their businesses to fruition in the second semester of the year. We work alongside members of the Canal Alliance Economic Development Team during Friday Special Interest Classes to realize student businesses here in Canal. The ideas run the gamut from a service based business that loads music onto music player hardware, to a soccer clothes store that produces all their gear from recycled materials. This is the inaugural year of the Business Class and plans are being put in place to make it a yearly event.
