With the aid of College Access Foundation, Canal Alliance is able to offer graduating seniors and continuing college students scholarships to attend college. We are currently providing scholarships to 25 students whom we also assist in choosing classes and applying for other sources of aid.
One of our requirements for scholarship recipients is that they participate and organize two community service projects annually. One of these events is Unity4commUnity, which college students founded four years ago. This is a family event which tries to address the stereotype of Cinco de Mayo simply being an alcoholic holiday.
College students also organize our Family College Tour Day in which we take our 60 families in the YEDP program to visit a college campus. In 2009 we visited UC Santa Cruz with much success and this 2010 students visited UC Davis.
