Immigration Law Internship: Spring 2012

The principal role of the intern would be to work on U Visa cases.  These are immigration applications for victims of certain crimes (domestic violence, sexual assault, attempted murder, etc) who cooperate in the investigation and/or prosecution of the crime.  Duties would include but are not limited to:
  • requesting police reports, filling out and requesting certification forms from police or district attorney, preparing cover letters and application packets, and translating client declarations from Spanish to English.
  • researching the regulations and writing more complex cover letters for cases that fall outside the norm, but might still qualify.
  • researching and summarizing country conditions documentation and researching and writing cover letters for asylum applications.
  • interviewing people arrested by ICE and drafting memos about possible motions to suppress.
Hours: very flexible, part-time (10-15 hours a week) January-May 2012

Prior coursework in immigration law helpful, but not required.  Spanish speaking ability and confidentiality is a must.
