Bilingual Receptionist

The Canal Alliance Opportunity Center (OC), located at 125 Bellam Blvd. in San Rafael, primarily serves Marin's immigrant temporary work force. Clients are asked to become members of the OC and to live out the OC’s principles - to make a commitment to Self, the OC, and the Community.  Members have priority access to vocational related classes, computers, services and jobs through Marinhelpers.com. Members agree to uphold the principles by doing things such as making a personal success plan, participating in community activities, supporting the OC’s marketing efforts and attending weekly meetings to discuss OC activities.

We seek a volunteer dynamo to be the “Face” of the OC. He/she will provide front office support and serve as the first impression of the OC to our visitors. This position helps to ensure that visitors and callers have a positive experience during their interaction with the OC’s staff and other volunteers.

  • Answering and directing phone calls
  • Keeping a running list of supplies to be ordered
  • Entering data into Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, and Salesforce
  • Using the internet to do research
  • Answering questions from the public, Center members and other volunteers

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Speaks and writes English and Spanish at an intermediate-advanced level
  • Is patient, warm and sensitive to each client’s diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and can maintain confidentiality. This can be challenging at times because every client comes in with a different skill set.
  • Can offer excellent customer service, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Uses the internet for basic job search functions
  • Is consistently available one day per week from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays
  • Can efficiently multi-task
  • Is familiar with Microsoft Office and Salesforce
  • Has fun working with a team of people who are passionate about working
  • with our immigrant population

Casual work clothing is acceptable. Work is performed within the reception area. The candidate will report to the OC Site Specialist, who will provide on-site job training on the first day and ongoing as needed. This position offers excellent résumé enhancement, transferable job skills development, information regarding the non-profit sector and available resources, an opportunity to develop Spanish skills, and the instrinsic reward of helping connect clients to paid work. This position is ideal for volunteers who want to enter the field of ESL, Spanish, social work, immigration, business and international relations, among others.

After the application is reviewed, you will be contacted to set up a placement interview.
