Canal Alliance is a comprehensive community resource center that has been serving Marin’s low-income immigrant populations with a full spectrum of initiatives from basic services to systemic solutions. With a mission to develop self-sufficiency and leadership for a healthier community, we invest most of our resources in proven Pathways to Success: Access to Resources, Education, Income Enhancement, and Leadership Development.
We seek a bilingual Spanish-English people-person with job search, résumé writing, and basic computer skills to work with primarily Spanish-speaking immigrants in a classroom. The goal is for them to learn about job development activities that will lead to employment opportunities.
Activities will include but are not limited to:
- Developing job development related classroom curriculum with a vocational ESL emphasis, such as helping students write résumés, cover and reference letters and reference lists helping clients write résumés, cover and reference letters
- Completing both online and hard copy job applications
- Searching for local jobs using online search engines
- Instructing clients on how to open email accounts, using email to communicate with potential employers uploading services-offered advertisements on Craigslist and other online employment related websites
- Preparing clients for interviews
The ideal candidate is someone who:
- Speaks and writes English and Spanish at an intermediate-advanced level
- Is patient, warm and sensitive to each client’s diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and can maintain confidentiality. This can be challenging at times because every client comes in with a different skill set.
- Can offer excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Uses the internet for basic job search functions
- Can efficiently multi-task
- Is familiar with Microsoft Office
- Is available to assist with two-hour Tuesday evening classes in Spanish from 7:00–9:00 p.m. at Canal Alliance from January 30 through March 12, and again from March 19 through April 30
- Has fun working with a team of people who are passionate about working with our immigrant population
Casual work clothing is acceptable. Aides will work in a classroom environment with an instructor. The candidate will report to the Job Development Coordinator, who will provide on-site job training on the first day and ongoing as needed. This position offers excellent résumé enhancement, transferable job skills development, information regarding the non-profit sector and available resources, an opportunity to develop Spanish skills, and the instrinsic reward of helping connect clients to paid work. This position is ideal for volunteers who want to enter the field of ESL, Spanish, social work, immigration, and career development among others, especially college and university students preparing to be English teachers.
