The Canal Alliance Opportunity Center (OC), located at 125 Bellam Blvd. in San Rafael, primarily serves Marin's immigrant temporary work force. Clients are asked to become members of the OC and to live out the OC’s principles - to make a commitment to Self, the OC, and the Community. Members have priority access to vocational related classes, computers, services and jobs through Marinhelpers.com. Members agree to uphold the principles by doing things such as making a personal success plan, participating in community activities, supporting the OC’s marketing efforts and attending weekly meetings to discuss OC activities.
We are seeking a bilingual Spanish-English people-person super hero to work directly with immigrants seeking temporary employment by improving their technology skills and English comprehension with related vocabulary.
Activities will include but are not limited to:
- Teach a two-hour class, once per week for two weeks. Current curriculum includes - Week one, teach students parts of the computer, Word, typing technique, vowels with accents and week two, teach students how to use the Internet using the Google search feature, and help students sign up for an email address
- Assist students with Spanish/English translationDemonstrate the use of a mouse and basic computer skills
- Teach clients how to open email accountsInstruct students in how search for jobs using
- Craigslist and other online jobs search websites
- Demonstrate to clients various online translation tools available
- Show students how to use Rosetta Stone to study English/Spanish
- Practice English with students, asking them what they want to know, focus on job vocabulary and past tense constructions
The ideal candidate is someone who:
- Speaks and writes English and Spanish at an advanced level
- Is patient, warm and sensitive to each client’s diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and can maintain confidentiality. This can be challenging at times because every client comes in with a different skill set.
- Can offer excellent customer service, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Uses the internet for basic job search functions
- Is consistently available one morning per week for 2 hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays
- Can efficiently multi-task
- Is familiar with Microsoft Office
- Has fun working with a team of people who are passionate about working with our immigrant population
Casual work clothing is acceptable. Work is performed within the reception area. The candidate will report to the OC Site Specialist, who will provide on-site job training on the first day and ongoing as needed. This position offers excellent résumé enhancement, transferable job skills development, information regarding the non-profit sector and available resources, an opportunity to develop Spanish skills, and the instrinsic reward of helping connect clients to paid work. This position is ideal for volunteers who want to enter the field of ESL, Spanish, social work, immigration, business and international relations, among others.
