TAX/ITIN Assistance

During the tax season we operate a VITA tax site on Sundays as part of Earn It! Keep It! Save It! to provide free assistance with income tax preparation.

These events are done in collaboration with Prosperity Partners, AARP, IRS, and Legal Aid of Marin and provide free assistance with preparing tax returns, applying for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and legal consultations.

Free Tax Assistance every Tuesday 4:00-8:00 and Sunday 12:00-4:00. (Closed February 19) until April 17th, 2012. Service in English and Spanish. You can make an appointment or come as a walk-in. ITINs can apply for an ITIN here at Canal Alliance as well. Our main entrance is on Larkspur Street, but the entrance for taxes is around the corner at 130 Alto St., across from the Canal Welcome Center. Information and appointments: 306-0435.

What is the ITIN?

Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It is a nine-digit number, similar in format to the SSN. It always begins with the number 9. ITINs are issued only to people who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Remember: ITIN is for tax purposes only. It does not authorize work and cannot be used as an identification number or for any purpose outside the tax system.
