Vilma has been involved with Canal Alliance and other community programs since 1992. She attended college in San Antonio, Texas; worked as a flight attendant, an innkeeper, and helped to open the first Marin Chevy’s Restaurant. Additionally, Vilma worked with Bahia Vista School’s Parent Committee to establish the Safe Routes to School program, and to initiate the renovation of their school.
Now, as Canal Alliance’s Probation Specialist, Vilma supplements the staffing at the Marin Adult Probation Department. There, she helps incarcerated Spanish-speaking detainees determine their eligibility for “Own Recognizance” release; informs them of their rights, options and the consequences of not complying with court requirements.
In her role as Family Advocate, Vilma directs her clients to Canal Alliance programs or to other appropriate local agencies.
“I find an incredible optimism in the minds and hearts of our clients, despite insurmountable odds, to achieve the American dream. My life experiences have guided me to help people find solutions to their problems and to help them succeed.”
Vilma lives in Kentfield, studies Buddhism, loves to garden and sit by the ocean whenever possible.
