Martin Steinman

Martin heads the Canal Alliance adult ESL (English as a Second Language) program, which enrolls over 400 students per semester. He also works on a number of economic development initiatives, including free tax assistance and workforce development for the local community.

Before coming to Canal Alliance, Martin taught social studies and ESL history at Tamalpais High School, where he also served as social studies department chair and vice president of the teachers' union. He has also taught English in China. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts.

Martin says, "Watching one of our ESL classes is a reminder of all that is good in education; our students have a powerful desire to improve their English, and their grace and good humor is extraordinary. At the same time, it's an honor to work alongside people of such caliber as the Canal Alliance staff and volunteers."

Martin lives in San Francisco, where he also volunteers for other organizations including La Raza Community Resource Center, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. He has lived and traveled on five continents.
