While Marin is well-known for its affluent communities, many immigrants in the Canal neighborhood live in poverty: 98% of children in the Canal’s elementary school qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, indicating an annual income of $21,000 or less for a family of four. Many immigrants lack language and vocational skills needed to secure a living wage and become productive citizens.
At Canal Alliance, Economic Development programming is all designed to accomplish one thing: to improve families’ economic status. We do this by helping individuals develop skill sets that will enable them to get ahead in their careers, improve their ability to manage their household finances, and connect them to broader networks of people and information. Our long-range vision is to help Canal residents become entrepreneurs and business leaders who make an even more significant contribution to the economy of San Rafael and Marin County.
