Canal Alliance provides English language development classes to over 1000 students per year. Many of our students return semester after semester, progressing up through the levels.
Our classes reflect the range of needs in the community. We have seven different levels of basic English, from beginner to advanced intermediate. Offerings include classes for students with literacy deficits, classes to study workplace English, writing workshops, and GED preparation.
Classes are offered in the morning, afternoon, evening, late evening, and weekends, allowing community members to study at whatever time they have available. Some morning classes and Saturday classes include free child care. We run 15-week courses in the fall and spring, plus an 8-week summer term. We offer more than 25 different classes each term in a variety of locations both inside out outside the Canal neighborhood.
Making it all happen is a team of dedicated volunteer teachers and classroom aides. In a year we use nearly 200 volunteers, with 100 to 120 working in any given semester. Most of our volunteers are highly committed to the program, putting great time and energy into the work and returning year after year. Many of our volunteers have received certification as ESL teachers, or are working towards certification; a number have taught professionally; and some were formerly students in our own ESL program.
These recordings are updated to reflect current information about the classes. At the end of each recording, leave a message with your name and phone number, and we will contact you.

PG&E has been a big supporter of Canal Alliance for many years. Their support enables us to address basic needs by providing emergency food and financial assistance, as well as to promote self-sufficiency and employability by providing English as a Second Language (ESL), computer literacy and financial education classes, small business development training, and other income enhancement programs.
