| Immigration Law Internship |
The principal role of the intern would be to work on U Visa cases. These are immigration applications for victims of certain crimes (domestic violence, sexual assault, attempted murder, etc.) who cooperate in the investigation and/or prosecution of the crime. Duties would include, but are not limited to:
- Requesting police reports, filling out and requesting certification forms from police or district attorney, preparing cover letters and application packets, and translating client declarations from Spanish to English;
- Researching the regulations and writing more complex cover letters for cases that fall outside the norm, but might still qualify;
- Researching and summarizing country conditions documentation and researching and writing cover letters for asylum applications;
- Interviewing raid victims and drafting memos about possible motions to suppress.
Hours – Very flexible, part-time (15-20 hours per week), February 1, 2010 through May 14, 2010.
Prior coursework in immigration law is helpful, but not required. Spanish-speaking ability and confidentiality are musts.
