Jorge is a man from Central
America who came to us
because he needed our help in
seeking asylum in the United
States. He described how he
faced constant threats and persecution
in his home country and
could not rely on the police to
protect him. He had suffered
discrimination his entire life.
He wanted to join his mate in the
United States yet could not apply
for residency as a family member.
The reason is that Jorge is
a gay man and immigration laws
do not recognize gay marriage.
We provided the legal help he
needed for his immigration interviews
and helped him plead his
case. As a result, he was granted
asylum and got his wish for a
life of basic dignity.
A Place for Freedom: Immigration and Citizenship
Our Immigration and Citizenship
program provides legal assistance
to individuals wishing to
reunite with families, begin working,
or become U.S. residents
or citizens.
Legal professionals assist over
150 individuals per month seeking
legal advice about their immigration,
citizenship or asylum status.
We offer classes in US history and
civics, providing residents the
information they need to become
residents and to engage fully in the
democratic process.
